What We Can Treat

Acute Back Pain can be defined as pain lasting less than 3 to 6 months, or pain that is directly related to tissue damage.

It is normally associated with performing an activity that you are not used to doing such as lifting paving slabs, cutting a hedge, digging out a trench and so on.

Regular bouts of Acute Back Pain will lead to the body compensating for the cause and after months and years is likely to develop into Chronic Back Pain.

Types of pain include:

  • Sharp Neck and Back Pain
  • Pains going into Arm or Leg (Classed as Neuropathic Pain such as Sciatica)

Conditions causing Acute Back Pain:

  • Disc Herniation & Prolapse
  • Facet Joint Irritation
  • Fracture (Red Flag)
  • Muscle Spasm

Chronic Back Pain can be defined as pain lasting longer than six months and can be split into two categories – Chronic Back Pain due to:

  1. an identifiable pain generator
  2. an un-identifiable pain generator

1. Chronic Back Pain with identifiable pain generator

This can be further sub divided into

  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Spondyloliesthesis
  • Spondylosis
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Osteopenia / Osteoporosis

  • Long term Stress & Anxiety
  • Depression

2. Chronic Back Pain with un-identifiable pain generator

This is where pain has become complex and is often associated with physical, psychological, behavioural and biochemical changes.

The following conditions would fall into this category:

  • Complex Regional Pain (CRP)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • ME

So what do we mean by ‘LIFESTYLE BACK PAIN’. Well we mean back pain that has been bought about by lifestyle choice.

A good example of this is PREGNANCY.
Pregnancy can change your posture due to the release of the hormone relaxin. This hormone allows for your soft tissues to relax and ‘give’ as you develop  and grow your precious cargo!
Pregancy back pain can include;

  • Neck and Low Back Pain
  • Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction (PSD)

Our Clinical Director, Dean Dickinson, was responsible for a team Physiotherapists provided to companies such as EDF Energy, UK Power Networks, Costain Construction and Kier.

Occupational Back Pain is on the rise due to more people working at Desks and Computers. With the rise of Home Working to provide flexability to staff it has seen people now working from a laptop on their dining room table. A poor workstation will lead to Neck and Back Pain, Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) and many more injuries.

We provide on site Musculoskeletal Services to Companies, On Site Talks, Personal Health Management and Staff Physio/Osteopathy Schemes.
